What is a men’s Islamic swimsuit?

The 'awra The part of the body that must be covered — according to the majority view of scholars — extends from the navel to the knees. A standard pair of swimming shorts leaves the lower abdomen and part of the thighs exposed, and once wet, they cling very tightly to the body. Under these circumstances, it is impossible to comply with Islam’s dress codes whilst enjoying a swim.

Caring for your swimwear

1. Rinse with clean water after every swim, whether in the sea or a swimming pool: salt and chlorine are the main causes of colour fading.
2. Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle, following the care instructions on the label.
3. Air-dry in the shade. Tumble drying damages the fabric’s elasticity, whilst direct sunlight causes colours to fade.
4. Don’t leave your damp swimsuit crumpled up in a bag: the fabric will dry quickly if you hang it up – it only takes a few minutes.
